1. Introduction

A famous Chinese writer named Shumin Bi once said, “I am not beautiful, but I am confident”. Because of self-confidence, Bill Gates left university and started to do business. From then on, millions of people are affected by the work of Bill Gates. Then, because of self-confidence, Bill Gates becomes a famous noun known to every family on the earth.
Self-confidence is positively related to education. Superficially, the relationship between the two definitions is not so close. Self-confidence is a category of psychology, an internal quality of human being. Nevertheless, education refers to the act or process of education. The concept of education is more abstract than that of self-confidence. In fact, self-confidence and education are two closely related words in the field of pedagogy. Almost every educationist at home and abroad emphasizes the cultivation of self-confidence of their students. As is know, self-confidence can promote people getting greater accomplishment, especially in the field of learning. Moreover, senior school plays an important role in the whole pedagogical system in China. As a result, it is essential for senior school students to lay a good foundation of foreign language training in senior school before entering the university (付克.1986:2)
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the elements affecting the formation of self-confidence on English learning in senior school students, consequently, trying to find out devices to cultivate students’ self-confidence on English learning in senior school.
2. The Importance of Self-confidence in English Education
Self-confidence is not a simple concept. It is relates to psychology and pedagogy. Psychologically, self-confidence, in a broad sense, comprises self-trust, self-esteem, courage and indomitability. This definition, though somewhat vague and unsubstantial, can be appreciated through experience in our lifetime. We are always seeking to achieve something successful and are always longing to attain a glorious goal, which can only be reached with the spirit of self-confidence.
To some extent, self-confidence is accompanied by will. Those who do not have a strong will often think they are unable to carry out any thorny tasks, while those who have a strong will do not feel the tasks insurmountably difficult for them. In fact, when our heart is void of self-confidence, every hope has gone; every thing on which we put our hands seems to be veiled in dark.
