English writing is an indispensable link in English learning in high schools. It hasalways been a focus of English teaching to develop the students writing skills and ability.However, the task for Chinese students to write something in English cohesively andlogically is of great difficulty. It is no wonder that the English writings written by Chinesestudents cannot be understood by readers. In order to improve the situation, it is importantto make the sentences coherent and smooth. Discourse markers, which help to connect theprior information and the following, play a significant part in discourse coherence. In thewriting process, the relationship between sentences or paragraphs can be presented clearlyas a quantity of particular discourse markers is used. DMs make it easier for readers tograsp the author’s intention more efficiently

1.1 Purpose of the Study
Over the recent years, many researchers have paid close attention to the discoursemarkers. Early researchers laid stress on some spoken DMs. They were fond to study thekind of words or phrases in oral English: you know, I mean, well, etc. By virtue of variousapproaches to discourse markers, many researchers both abroad and at home studieddiscourse markers in writings. Among them, some studied the use of DMs in Chinese EFLwriting. One of the Chinese researchers, Zhao Shuren (1991) had a general study ondiscourse markers. He suggests that in EFL learner’s writings, discourse markers areindispensable for discourse coherence. Chen Xinren (2017) carried out a research inargumentative writings written by Chinese English majors. Many various researches on theuse of DMs have been made including contrastive analysis between the more capablestudents and less capable students, or between Chinese EFL learners and native speakers,individual categories of DMs and the misuse of DMs in writings by Chinese Englishlearners. By means of these researches, large quantities of problems about use of DMs havebeen found. Some researchers have related the use of DMs in writings to language learningand English pedagogy.
As the researches mentioned above, problems turn up when DMs are used in Englishwritings, which were found by some researchers through many studies. But few researcheshave been made on the use of DMs in writings of different genres by high school students.What should not be ignored is that in high school students use DMs redundantly,insufficiently or inappropriately. The students’ preference for what kinds of DMs in theirwritings should be made clear. In this thesis, the author focuses on discourse markers usedin narrative writings written by students in the local high school with the purpose oflearning about the fundamental state of DMs, the characteristics of frequently used DMs innarrative writings and the common inappropriate use of certain DMs. In addition, the thesisattempts to disclose the possible reasons behind the misused or inappropriately used DMs,and propose some tentative strategies to facilitate the high school English teachers tochange their current teaching methods and improve the students’ writing ability.
