Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research
Reading  plays  a  crucial  role  among  the  five  language  skills(listening,  speaking, reading,  writing  and  translating),  and  it  is  also  one  of  the  approaches  for  English learners to learn language. One of the basic requirements for college students is able to read  some  general  English  journals,  English  newspapers,  English  novels  and  articles. Reading  is  a  comprehensive  skill  which  requires  readers  of  owning  a  great  deal  of vocabulary  and  grammar  knowledge.  Besides,  reading  takes  a  great  proportion  among various English proficiency tests and it is the important channel to acquire knowledge. According  to  2017  version  of  College  English  Curriculum  Requirements,  the  basic requirement  for  reading  includes  that  “students  are  expected  to  be  able  to  employ effective reading strategies while reading.” For teachers, it is necessary to teach students how  to  use  strategies  to  read.  Stern(1983)  holds  that  learning  strategies  are  different from  learning  techniques.  Learning  strategy  is  the  general  characteristics  of  learning method. Therefore, it means that learning strategies are able to be acquired by training. Meta-cognition  emerged  in  the  70’s  of  last  century  and  has  always  been  one  of  the focuses  of  psychological  and  Educational  research.  Flavell(1976)  firstly  mentioned  the term  of  meta-memory,  which  refers  to  an  individual’s  ability  to  monitor  the  input, storage,  search  and  retrieval  of  the  contents  of  his  own  memory.  Flavell  defined meta-cognition  as  follows:  “In  any  kind  of  cognitive  transaction  with  the  human  or non-human  environment,  a  variety  of  information  processing  activities  may  go  on. Meta-cognition  refers,  among  other  things,  to  the  active  monitoring  and  consequent regulation and orchestration of these processes in relation to cognitive objects or data on which  they  bear,  usually  in  service  of  some  concrete  goal  or  objective”(Flavell,1976: 232).  Meta-cognition  consists  of  two  parts:  meta-cognitive  knowledge  and meta-cognitive strategies.
