Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
In the field of foreign language teaching in the last two decades, a significant shift focusing onimprovement in learning rather than teaching. Plenty of researches focused on the relationship betweenlearning strategies and its process. English is considered as one of the main and important subjects in theChinese courses, but the current situation is that the students feel discouraged and teacher feel exhaustedfor outcome despite they made lots of efforts. It is disappointed that lots of students are tired of learningEnglish and have lower autonomy ability, especially in China western areas which are lack of languageenvironment. The basic requirements for college English teaching of Ministry of Education pointed out thatthe goal of college English teaching is to cultivate students’ integrated English language ability, especiallythe listening and speaking skills so that students can make oral and written information exchangeeffectively in future work and social interactions, and to strengthen the independent learning ability andimprove overall culture accomplishment in order to adapt to the need of international development.Meanwhile, it is a fact that the proportion of listening comprehension in new CET-4 is increased to 35%.Therefore, enhancing and improving the listening ability of contemporary college students has become anurgent and important task.

1.2 Significance of the Research
Listening is the most basic channel of language input and human communication at present. Accordingto the statistics of American foreign language pedagogy experts River and Tempery in 1978, listening takes45% in human communication activity, while speaking takes 30%, reading takes 16%, and writing takes9%. It is obvious that listening plays an important role. Hedge (2017) indicated that it needs to develop ahigh level of listening proficiency. As some researchers noted that our communication become more vividand listening and understanding is the long-term task to insist on.It is well-known that the purpose of foreign language teaching is to improve the learners’ abilities tocommunicate with others well. Thus, listening and speaking ability seems more important in languageteaching. But because of the reality of listening situation in Gansu province which has poor languagelearning environment, many non-English majors at universities become mute-and-deaf English learners.Majority of learners do not know many listening strategies and how to employ them, even have no interestin English learning. They spent much time but got a little achievements. In recent years, many foreign linguists have done a lot of studies on language learning strategies inautonomous learning environment, which aims to find an effective way to enhance language learners’listening level. However, the related research is not much in China, less for students in universities.
