Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Origin of the study
At the same time, wiHi the advanced technology rushing into China, there arelots of opportunities for Chinese people in various fields to communicate withforeigners in English. All of these have a higher level of English listening in therelevant fields than before. Additionally, according to the SLA (Second LanguageAcquisition) research on the relation between the input and output, listening has animportant role in language acquisition just because it provides input for the EFL(English as a foreign language) learners. For college English,CET4 (College EnglishTest Band Four) and CET6 are the main test forms, which are mainly used to test thecollege students from non-English majors.In recent years, traditional test type has been transferred into a new one, whichemphasizes the importance of English ability. Listening accounts for 35% of thewhole test paper. This reformation of GET suggests that our government beginincreasing emphasis on English listening. Accordingly, college English teachingshould shift teaching focal point to students' listening and speaking proficiency. But in today's college English teaching, the teaching method is very traditional evenout-dated. Generally speaking,there are four methods for listening teaching,namely,Repetitive type, which demands teacher repeating the listening materials many timesuntil the students understand; Inserting type,which means teachers should stoplistening to explain even to do some related exercises if students cannot understandsome questions in the process of listening; Expositive type, that is to say, during thecourse of listening,if students cannot understand the words and expressions, teacherswould stop there and explain immediately then continue listening; Selecting type,which means before listening, teachers would explain difficult language pointsincluding words and phrases in order to help students understand more easily. Thefour methods of teaching emphasize students' single listening skills,英语毕业论文,so students arepassive. In this teaching environment, students' listening comprehension cannot beimproved greatly. To some extent, these methods are not ideal.

1.2 Necessity and significance of study
PBL for the learners has instructive significance. For one thing,research isbased on the ill-structure,so the open and real problem can be regarded as thestarting point of PBL. These complicated problems are very close to the real word,so much so that it is very difficult to solve problem by applying simply inherentknowledge before. This kind of problem situation creates a "cognitive conflict” andarouses students’ interest. For another, PBL can cultivate students' thinking andability. Wittgenstein (1977),the famous philosopher and ancestor of constructivismhas one famous conclusion,英语论文网站,that is “the meaning exists in its usage”,namely in theapplication of situation, the meaning of knowledge is being discoveredconstantly. Educators Dewey (2017) advocates "learning by doing“,and putsforward the famous idea of five-step thinking (about problem-solving). From theseeducators, we can see that they pay great attention to problem-solving duringstudents, thinking training.
