Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
Foreign language teaching is a complex system, in which teachers play multiple roles,such as controllers, organizers, managers, evaluators, promoters, participants, messengers,consultants, etc. Undoubtedly, teachers can not carry out educational and teaching activitieseffectively unless they can play appropriate roles in the specific situation and in proper ways.Therefore, the classroom is just the process in which teachers and students, students andstudents can cooperate to construct knowledge in the interactive environment. As the iraininteractive actors, teachers play the important Mediation roles in the process.In recent years, the theories of foreign language teaching have developed rapidly in ourcountry, and many teachers have applied the new achievements of these theories (such as thetheory of linguistics, the theory of psycho-linguistics, the theory of cognitive linguistics,英语论文题目,thetheory of second language acquisition etc.) to college English teaching. Years of teachingpractice shows that the practice of college English teaching is successful under certaintheoretic guidance. Now, under the higher demand for college English teaching, teachershave realized that they can't only simply impart knowledge to students and they should putmore emphasis on the cultivation of students' learning abilities,which requires teachersto redefine their roles and give full play to their roles in classroom teaching so as to enablestudents to participate consciously in classroom learning.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
The deepening of the modem teaching concept urges the English teaching in China topay more attention to students' roles. Students should carry out the meaningful constructionby themselves. In this process,英语论文题目,teachers are no longer the providers and transmitters ofknowledge, but the helpers, promoters and inspirers of meaning construction. Using theappropriate language,teachers should guide and monitor the learning behaviors of students,and then provide proper feedback, which can enable learners to reach a highercognitive level. This effect is called "mediation". Therefore, the roles of teachers changefrom :he traditional transmitters of knowledge into the helpers and guiders of students'learning. More precisely, teachers become the bridges or mediators between students'autonomous learning and knowledge acquisition. As mediators, teachers should play theirmediation roles effectively and stimulate learners appropriately in order to develop theirabilities to solve problems. Teachers should also stimulate students' learning interest throughguidance and encouragement.As for the newly founded independent colleges, because of their ownspecial characteristics, the English teaching in independent colleges has not formed its ownsystem and is still in the process of exploration and development. There are also someproblems in teaching level, teaching quality, as well as teaching methods,etc. All of theseunfavorable factors can affect English teaching. Besides, the English level of the students inindependent colleges is relatively low, and the students not only lack interest in learningEnglish but also lack the enthusiasm and initiative in the classroom. Therefore, theEnglish teachers of independent colleges should change their roles more thoroughly
