Abstract
In recent years, interpreting has achieved great development in China. The development of its theory, however, is far left behind that of its practice. Interpreting is a special kind of communication, while the focus of relevance theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson is communication and cognition. Therefore relevance theory can be applied to the interpretation studies. This paper tempts to study conference interpreting anticipation from the relevance theory perspective in order that an interpreter makes full preparation before the interpreting and successfully anticipates what the speaker is going to say through the combination of the previous cognitive context of his own and the oral context created by the speaker during the interpretation.
This paper will base on relevance theory, take on-the-spot interpreting practice as example, and discuss the application of relevance theory to conference interpreting anticipation from the conference interpreting process and the ostensive-inferential communication perspective. It aims that interpreting can be learned in a more systematic way and it can throw some light on interpreting practice.

Chapter 1 Introduction
Interpretation is a communication process which converts information from one language to another through utterance. It serves as a bridge in cross-cultural exchanges, breaking down the language obstacles. With China’s foreign exchanges being increasingly frequent, there is an accordingly fast growing demand for interpreting personnel. As a result, not only is there a great development in interpreting practice, studies concerning interpretation has also gained more and more attention. However, interpretation studies in China started late and most of them were based on practices, resulting in a lack of theories. Therefore, the theoretical studies in this field should be deepened.
