Abstract

Jane Eyre, written by female fictionist Charlotte Brontë, is a novel abounding with feminist characteristics. It successfully created a Victorian girl who wants to experience the fullness of her humanity by striving for respect, equality and independence. Therefore this paper, in light of the feminist perspective, tries to make a comparison of its two Chinese versions by Zhu Qingying(female) and Wu Junxie (male) respectively. The author analyzes the deficiencies (semantic features, grammatical features, aesthetic preference.) and illustrates them with specific examples. In addition, based on the translation theories put forward by Simon, Flotow and Newmark, strategies and suggestions to foreground feminist characteristics are given. Finally, it is expected that this paper can arouse further research and practice of feminist translation studies in China and help raise English majors’ ability of cross-cultural communication.

Key words: feminist translation; semantic features; grammatical features; aesthetic preference; translation strategies

1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction to feminist translation
Since the gender perspective in translation studies was brought into light in the 1970s, feminist translation theory in the west has been under academic discussion on the historical origins of feminism, its function and influence on translation studies. Western feminist translation theories deny the traditional gender theories and translation studies that both translators and women are of low status, or rather, they are respectively the servants of the original writers and men, which reflects males’ bias and gender discrimination. Such combination of translation and feminism studies influence people’s thinking and finally leads to the formation of feminist translation studies.
