Abstract and Key Words
Abstract: With the development of global economy and China’s entry into WTO, translation of international contract is becoming more and more important. The author of this thesis discusses step by step the functions, classification and translation of archaic words derived from here and there. There are two main functions: the semantic function and logic function. The word can be classified as word describing time, word describing space, word describing way/ belonging/accompanying and word describing reason. The author then deals with translation of such word. Zero translation, translation of the other part and addition are put forward as sufficient translation methods. Finally, it is pointed out that a translator needs to adopt translation methods flexibly according to the specific context.

1. Introduction
With the development of economic globalization and China's opening to the outside world, contract translation is showing more and more importance. Contracts are legal documents. Traditional legal translation theories over-emphasize strict literal translation. Nowadays, translators and scholars come to realize that the creativity of legal translators assumes an important role in contract translation and directly influences the quality of translation. Liu Jianwei states in his book A Study of the Stylistic Features and E-C Translation of Contracts that the stylistic features of contracts include the common usage of formal words, archaic words, synonyms, the word “shall”, long sentences, conditional adverbial clauses and so on. This thesis will focus on functions, classification and translation of archaic words derived from here and there in contract English.
Archaic words are old-fashioned words which point to another part of the text in which they are found, or to another place or time. They are the Old and Middle English words, Old English is the name given to that form of the English language before the Norman Conquest and down to about 1100. Middle English covers the period 1100 to about 1500.
