Abstract
As the essence of a particular language, idioms represent the cultural characteristics of the nation that use the language. English, with its long history, has rich cultural deposits and its idioms naturally possess profound cultural connotations. Translation should not only realize the equivalence of information but also take into consideration the processing of the cultural factors of the original text in the target language context. And foreignization, which is source language-oriented and domestication, which is target language-oriented, are two main strategies to deal with the cultural factors in translation. This article is trying to argue that in the context of globalization, foreignization should be treated as the main strategy and domestication as a complementary one in the translation of English idioms by analyzing the connotation of English idioms and their translations with specific examples. Thus foreign cultures and new means of expressions can be transmitted to China, enabling us to know more about the differences between cultures of English-speaking countries and that of our own and enrich our own cultures and language. Therefore, it is not only feasible but also necessary to translate English idioms into Chinese with foreignization as the main strategy and domestication as a complementary one.

1. Introduction
Idioms refer to those special fixed expressions developed in the course of usage of a language. In a broad sense, idioms include proverbs, mottoes, colloquialisms, slang and allusions. Idioms, which are produced and developed in the course of human life and production practice, are ubiquitous in English. With their concise and vivid meanings, English idioms reflect in a large extent the cultural and historical characteristics of the English-speaking countries.
So far many scholars have studied the translation means and strategies of idioms, and the traditional views focus on the methods of literal and liberal translation. Literal translation requires that the target text should follow the original text strictly both in content and form, while liberal translation tries to transfer the meaning with no regards to the formal equivalence. Zhang Ning, Wang Fang , Zhao Wentong and Chen Yongsheng , Lu Difei and many other scholars proposed these two methods in the translation of idioms.
