Abstract
With beautiful natural scenery, profound culture and long history, China attracts millions of foreign tourists every year. It is estimated that China would be the world largest tourist destination by the year 2020. Under this circumstance, the English versions of tourism texts as important publicity materials will play a vital role in publicizing China's tourist attractions to the world.
Reception theory focuses on readers’ reception of the text and participation in literature works. The essence of reception theory is horizon of expectation. Due to different language background, thinking model, living customs and knowledge structure, readers from different countries establish different horizon of expectation. The success of tourism texts translation can only be achieved by meeting readers’ language background and catering to their cultural psychology.
This thesis employs reception theory as theoretical foundation and mainly studies the instructive significance of reception theory in tourism texts translation. It adopts content analysis and case study as research methods. It first gives a brief introduction of reception theory, its representatives and features; then with comparative analysis with other widely-adopted translation theories, the advantages of reception are presented. After that, with detailed analysis, difficulties in achieving high-quality translation of tourist texts are demonstrated. At last, under the guidance of reception theory, it provides some translation techniques and methods for tourism texts translation in the hope that the high quality of tourism texts can be achieved.
