1 Introduction
It is well known that Chinese and English are poles apart. However, when Chinese students who are lacking a “real” English environment learn English, they easily tend to ignore the differences between these two languages. This is particularly the case with writing. The Chinese students are familiar with their habit of writing in Chinese practice, so they often put it into practice in English writing. The result is the so-called Chinglish, a clumsy mixture in which ideas conceived in Chinese are unidiomatically or ungrammatically expressed in English writing. The primary cause of Chinglish is linguistic interference, but to get rid of the negative influence of one’s mother tongue, it remains of paramount importance for teachers of English Writing in China.
The role of our mother tongue in English learning has been a controversial issue. However, mother tongue influences can be easily traced in all aspects of second language learners’ inter-language. Foreign language teaching proceeds when the learners have already mastered their mother tongue. So in the second language teaching theory and practice, the influence of mother tongue is an unavoidable factor.
