Abstract: Although there are so many advantages in the application of multimedia technology to language teaching, it is a pity that in today’s college English classes, few teachers are able to integrate the modern education technology into their language teaching. Take Fetion as an example. There are almost no reports about the teachers who have applied Fetion to the language teaching and learning, despite the fact that Fetion can serve as an essential communicating tool with its speed and convenience in delivering free messages among Fetion users. Therefore it is necessary to probe into the issue both in theory and in practice. By introducing the definition and characteristics of Fetion, the author tries to analyze the feasibility of Fetion-aided college English teaching. Based on the theory of autonomous learning and multimedia-aided teaching, the paper aims to study the role of Fetion in autonomous English learning, with the teaching of college English translation as an example. The author tries to explore the key question—how to make full use of Fetion in self-access English learning.
Key Words: Fetion; autonomous learning; College English translation teaching

It is one of the important objectives of college English teaching to develop students’ autonomous learning ability. With the expansion of foreign language teaching reform, great importance is attached to learners’ autonomy. However, China’s current researches related to this topic usually focus more on the importance of learners’ autonomy by criticizing the traditional teaching models and philosophy while neglecting the necessity and importance of teachers’ involvement to some extent. It is reported that the majority of Chinese students have not formed the autonomous learning habit. As a result, a considerable number of students are negative in learning, failing to fulfill the preview and revision work required, let along challenging their teachers. On the other hand, the fast growth of the Internet in our country has been influencing language teaching and learning. Consequently, a significant shift is required in teaching methodology, course materials, and theories of language teaching and learning. |
