Chapter One    Introduction
1.1 Brief Introduction about Gothic Fiction, “Frustration-aggression Hypothesis” and Frankenstein
The book of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein belongs to Gothic fiction, which is a genre or mode of literature that combines fiction, horror and Romanticism. The name Gothic refers to the medieval buildings in which many of such kind of stories take place. Frankenstein was begun in Switzerland, 1816, and later finished in London, 1817. It was first published on January 1, 1818, which tells the story of a young Swiss student named Victor Frankenstein, who discovered the secret of re-animating lifeless body by assembling the body parts of various people. Unfortunately he creates a monster that vows revenge on his creator after being rejected from society. For a long time, the severity of the monster’s behavior has caused the readers of the book to wonder: What was the real cause of this tragedy? Did it result from Victor’s fanatical pursuit of science? Or was it because of the common people and their unfair treatment of the monster? Although the tragedy was caused by many reasons, this paper will emphasize that the latter reason was the strongest catalyst.
