Abstract:
Out of Africa, an autobiographical novel written by the Danish writer Isak
Dinesen, narrates the Dinesen’s life of managing coffee plantation in Africa and her affectionate recollection of natural scenery, animals and people of Africa. There is no doubt that the novel is permeated with ecologism and feminist consciousness.
The thesis aims at interpeting the ecofeminst consciousness in the novel of Out of Africa, elaborating the men’s oppression of nature and women, the heroine’s revolt and challenge to the male-dominated society, and the ardent love of the heroine and the African natives for nature, indicating that only dismantling the anthropocentrism and androcentrism that have long existed in the human society, can people achieve the human-nature harmony and gender equality.

1. Introduction
1.1 Introduction to Isak Dinesen
Isak Dinesen, the pseudonym of Karen Blixen, was one of the distinguished writers in Demark, known as the “literary treasures” of Demark with Hans Christian Anderson. She was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature award and was the winner of Hans Christian Anderson Award and Pengtuopidan Award.
Isak Dinesen first achieved fame in America, and gradually enjoyed reputation all over the world. Born in 1885 and died in 1962, she lived most of her life in her birthplace, Rungstedlund. In 1914, full of longings, she set foot in African land with her husband. And the 17 years here has witnessed the vicissitudes of her life. In 1921, she divorced her husband after eight years of marriage and devoted herself to managing the plantation. In 1931, due to the bankruptcy of the plantation, she returned to her hometown with mental and physical exhaustion and started writing career in English and Danish under the pseudonym of Isak Dinesen. Her first two successful works were Seven Gothic Tales and Out of Africa, the latter was adapted into a film that won him the international acclaim. Her other works includes Winter’s Tales, Last Tales, Shadows on the Grass etc.
