Abstract
Pecola was a black girl who lived in the Great Depression. As a black girl growing up in a family in short of parental love, she suffered greatly from the schoolmate’s taunt and teacher’s indifference, and even worse, the rape from her father. She was also a victim of the white culture aggression in America and got lost in the allusion of having blue eyes, which become the origin of her tragic fate.
This thesis has three parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of Toni Morrison and The Bluest Eye, one of her masterpieces. In the second part, the author analyzes the tragic life of Pecola. She is the victim of racial discrimination who pursues a pair of blue eyes with a distorted self-value and aesthetic standard. In the third part, the author analyzes the causes that result in the tragic life of Pecola such as the depressive social environment, unhappy family and the personality defects of Pecola’s lack of self-identity and lack of resistance.
By analyzing Pecola’s tragic fate, this paper appeals the African Americans to dominate their own destiny. If they betray their own culture in the pursuit of an alien value, they would loose their confidence and even the hope of the nation. What’s worse, the young generation of the African Americans would follow the tragedy of their parents and be trapped in the vicious circle of racial discrimination.
Key words: Pecola; self-identity; self-awareness; tragic fate
