Abstract
The so-called "defamiliarization" is a technique often used in literary creation. This unconventional technique conduces to better understanding and deeper feelings. In terms of the content and the form, it violates the default truth, and is not in accordance to common logic. On the other hand, this technique conforms to human’s emotional logic, and leads readers to the unusual realms of arts. American writer Kathleen Ann Potter`s short story The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is the magnum opus of using defamiliarization.
The Jilting of Granny Weatherall was published in “Change” in 1930, with a single protagonist, the granny. Following Porter’s consistent style, the novel has unique narrative pattern, with symbolisms throughout the text. The use of stream of consciousness incisively and vividly expresses the misery and struggle of the granny before death. This thesis takes The Jilting of Granny Weatherall as an example to analyze the application of defamiliarization in it in terms of language, theme, narrative mode and rhetorical device, in hopes of achieving the dual-effect of deepened understanding and aesthetic extension. With a thorough understanding of the story, the readers may be able to feel the significance of defamiliarzation and its infinite charm.

摘 要
“陌生化”,是文学创作常采用的一种异于常规的表现手法。这种手法的应用能满足作家更好的传情达意的需要。就内容与形式而言,陌生化手法违背人类公认的真理,违反正常的逻辑思维。但从另一个角度上看,陌生化手法却符合人物的情感逻辑,并引领读者步入艺术的殿堂。美国作家----凯萨琳安恩波特就是应用陌生化手法的典范。其中,《被遗弃的老祖母》是陌生化手法应用的代表著作。
《被遗弃的老祖母》于1930年发表在《变迁》杂志上,小说的主人公只有老祖母一人。正如波特一贯的风格,此文叙事模式独特,象征手法贯穿全文,英语论文范文,意识流的应用更将老祖母临终前的悲苦与抗争表达的淋漓尽致。本论文以《被遗弃的老祖母》一文为例,从语言,英语论文,主题,叙事模式,修辞手法等方面对陌生化手法的实际应用进行略论,以期达到理解加深与审美延长的双重效果。在思索文本的深层次内涵的同时,感受到陌生化手法存在的意义及其无穷的魅力。
