ABSTRACT
George Orwell, one of the most influential writers in British literature, is well-known for his masterpiece Animal Farm (1945), which is acclaimed as one of the greatest political fables of 20th century. In Animal Farm, Orwell depicts the rise and the decline of a revolution of “Animalism” in a farm: the miserable life of the animals on the Manor Farm under the exploitation of their farmer Mr. Jones spurs them to rebel against the human beings led by pigs. Then animals successfully create a fair society only for animals. However, after the revolution Napoleon carries out totalitarianism: the blood-and-iron policy to tame the animals and the obscurantist policy to control animals’ mind in order to defend his position as the only leader of the farm, which finally leads to the failure of revolution. Based on the analysis of the manifestation of totalitarianism in both ruling class and ruled class in Animal Farm, the paper proceeds to point out totalitarianism results in the corruption both in ruling class and the social values. Finally the paper concludes Orwell reveals in his Animal Farm the totalitarianism can damage social values and democracy with the purpose to ring an alarm bell to the democratic society.
