Abstract:
The Great Gatsby, written by the American writer F.Scott.Fitzgerald, is considered as the symbol of American literature. This thesis explores the cause of the breakdown of Gatsby’s illusion by analyzing its origins and essence. It also uncovers the brutality of reality from perspective of the historical background and the cruelty of society. In the end, we can learn the influence on the conflict between illusion and reality for Gatsby’s destiny.

《了不起的盖茨比》,由美国作家菲茨杰拉德所著,被认为是美国文学的象征。本文通过略论《了不起的盖茨比》中的主人公盖茨比幻想的根源与本质探究其美国梦破灭的原因,并从历史背景和社会的冷漠等方面揭示现实的残酷,英语毕业论文,从而阐述幻想与现实的冲突对盖茨比命运的作用。

1.1 Introduction to Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby not only shows people’s life and ideas in “Jazz Age”, but also puts forward their own moral evaluation. By the portrait of, Gatsby who is a simple, hard-working young man at the beginning, then becomes a rich man fantasying success, and later becomes a false criminal and ultimately turns out to be death, Fitzgerald lets the reader understand young people’s blind pursuit of the American dream in the twenties and the deep truth causing their dreams evaporated. But the pursuit of money satisfaction on Fitzgerald for his lover, spending money like water, indulges himself in life just like Gatsby. It’s necessary that their favorite life evaporated. Fitzgerald’s early works have many shortcomings. For example, the descriptions of the character in his book are superficial, not so typical. But recently he overcame weaknesses, which makes The Great Gatsby have many extraordinary ideas. His writing skills became more flexible.
