Abstract
Gone with the Wind, the novel written by Margaret Mitchell has taken an irreplaceable status in the world literature. The novel portraits the livelihood from the breaking out to the ending of the war, sets its clues through the complex love between Scarlett, Rhett, Ashley, and Melanie, to show a splendid and vivid picture of the southern American.
As a wife, Melanie trusts her husband--Ashley Wilkes firmly, she supported Ashley’s ideas firmly although these ideas didn’t accord with people’s opinions. As a friend, Melanie understood Scarlett very well, she knew exactly what her friend really needed. She protected Scarlett just like Scarlett’s mother--Ellen with all her forces. As a woman, Melanie showed her profound knowledge, leniency and noble virtues to the whole society. She became a role model of all woman in that times. She could always perform perfectly no matter what happens to her. People around her could feel kindness and warmth all the time. In a word, Melanie can be used as pronouns of all good things.

The book is a perennial bestseller with thousands of copies sold every year, making it one of the most successful novels of all time, even though critics are ambivalent about the literary merits of Margaret Mitchell's historical saga. Gone With the Wind has been hailed as a triumph of American literature. The novel depicts a picture of the social life of the Southern region of America and describes the change of the America during and after the civil war.
