摘要
本文主要探讨《哈利• 波特》系列丛书中的人物以及部分地点的名称和命名措施。《哈利• 波特》系列书籍是近20年来全世界最畅销的小说之一。关于这套书的空前好评，有很多原因，英语论文，其中之一便是作者关于人物和地点颇具特色的命名。本文主要从以英语和其他语言为语源，以及从文学著作和历史事件中引用这三种措施来略论大部分人名和少量的地名，英语毕业论文，从而得出这种命名手法的影响和意义。

Abstract
This thesis mainly studies on the names and naming methods of characters and a few places from the Harry Potter book series. The Harry Potter book series have been one of the bestselling novels in the last twenty years from all over the world. As for the unprecedented popularity of the book series, there are many reasons.One of them is the names with distinguishing feature which the author gave to the characters and places. This thesis mainly analyzes names of most roles and a few places from three aspects, which are the English-derived names, etymology from other languages, and the quotes from literatures and historical events, and then it works out the function and meaning of this naming art.

1. Introduction
1.1 Character name
From the field of linguistics, character names belong to proper names. And a conservative linguistic theory believes that the latter have no notional or emotional meaning but simple distinction function, as proper names are unparalleled existences in nature and in human society. This kind of belief is actually inaccurate and unsuitable for practical literatures. In fact, character names in many stories are always endowed with profound connotations. For example, Cinderella originates from cinders, which means coal ash and dust. Cinderella’s name implies her miserable and inconspicuous fate.
1.2 The books and the naming features.
The Harry Potter fantasy book series chronicle the adventures about young wizard Harry Potter and his friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main line of their adventures is Harry’s fatal mission to overcome the dark wizard, Voldemort, who aims to be immortal through killing people and conquer the whole world.
