1.     Introduction
Stephen Crane (1871 – 1900) was born at Newark, New Jersey in 1871. He was educated at Lafayette College and Syracuse University. When the Spanish-American war broke out, he went to serve as a journalist in Cuba. However, his health was seriously affected in Cuba, and on his return he settled down in England. He died at Badenweiler, Germany in 1900.
It is universally known that Stephen Crane is a forerunner of American naturalism, and he is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of the realistic period. He has used many writing techniques in his works, such as irony, symbolism and so forth. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets was Crane’s first novel, and it was also the first naturalist novel in American history. This book was published in 1893 at his expense. Then in 1895, he published his most famous novel The Red Badge of Courage which “won the admiration of such writers as William Dean Howells1, Joseph Conrad2 and Henry James3, and brought him into prominence”. After that, he was sent to Cuba as a correspondent to cover the Spanish-American War. The Open Boat, his famous short story, was based on “his experience as a correspondent in Cuba and his shipwreck on the way there”.
