摘 要
在中国经济飞速发展的今天,中国政府越来越重视向世界展现和打造中国以及国人的形象。而中国的形象长久以来就随着时代变迁不断地变化。而文学著作为探讨西方人眼中的中国形象提供了大量的资料。本论文通过对小说《面纱》的具体略论来探讨其中所描写体现出的中国形象。
本论文主要分为四个部分。第一部分介绍了本论文的探讨背景、目的,以及论文选取小说的简介和作者背景简介。第二部分是文献综述以及相关探讨理论基础的介绍,主要是比较文学的形象学的探讨理论。第三部分针对小说《面纱》中体现出来的两种形象做具体实例略论。第四部分主要根据之前介绍的理论基础,比对中国当时国情和作者的处境,略论小说中中国人形象的形成原因。
通过应用形象学的理论对小说中的中国人形象进行实例略论,本论文得出结论,英语论文范文,小说中的中国人形象有客观环境和精神两个方面,英语论文范文,客观环境方面刻画的中国肮脏、混乱、人情冷漠,基本符合当时中国基本事实,但是言辞夸张,带有主观色彩;精神方面把中国刻画成可以找到灵魂归宿的净土。而其形成原因主要是由于小说作者毛姆自身的处境和心理需求。

ABSTRACT
With the fast development of the economy in China, Chinese government pays more attention to shape and show the Chinese image to the whole world. What’s more, the Chinese image has always changed with the changing of the time. Literary works provide abundant supports for the research of the Chinese image in others’ eyes. This paper chooses the novel the Painted Veil as a model to do specific analysis to find out the Chinese image revealing in this novel.
This thesis contains four parts. The first part contains an introduction to the research background and aim, and a general introduction to William Somerset Maugham, the author of the novel. The second part is literature review and related theoretic basis on imagology in comparative literature. The third part focuses on the study of two kinds of Chinese images shown in this novel through specific examples. The forth part finds out the causes of the formation of such kind of image by analyzing the real condition in China at that time and the situation Maugham was in.
Through the analysis above, this thesis finds out that there are two images in the novel. One is objective – China is dirty, disordered, and Chinese people are cold and indifferent, which conforms to the real condition in China basically, but with exaggeration and subjectivity. Another is spiritual – China is only place where people can find his or her end-result. Both of the two are related to Maugham’s situation and mental needs.
