Abstract

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in 1885. It is commonly recognised as one of the great American novels. This paper makes an analysis of Huckleberry Finn’s adaptation to the “civilized world” through Huck’s psychology, characteristics and experience and the society he was living. This paper reveals the corruption of the society, applauds Huck’s heroic characteristic, and indicates the meaning of Huck’s pursuit of freedom.
The slavery and the corrupted religious doctrines suppressed the whole society, from which, Huck and Jim both suffered. However, they had the pursuit for freedom deep
in mind. Huck found a suitable way to adapt to the “civilized world”: on one hand, he disguised himself and deceived the people around; on the other hand, he built his own world that brought him freedom and relief. Huck’s encounter with Jim has laid a foundation for the communication between the white and the black. Jim’s frankness
and kindness won Huck’s loyalty. Huck treated Jim as an equal man and a parent who took care of him. There is a sharp contrast between the democratic life on the raft and the hypocritical life onshore. This contrast is definitely a satire to the corrupting “civilized world”, and it indicates that the diseases of the society are going to perish someday
