Abstract
Earnest Hemingway (1899-1961) is one of America’s most important literature masters in the 20th century. Throughout his career, Hemingway spent more than ten years intermittently writing twenty short stories about Nick. When we actually come to know Nick, we will arrive at this conclusion: although the Nick Adams Stories are not as famous as Hemingway’s other stories, it does have far-reaching impact on the formation of the so-called tough guy characters. This influence would invite us to start a study of Nick and then try to analyze the internal connection in Hemingway’s “highly autobiographical” literary works.
In the series of Nick Adams stories, besides Nick, his father is also a very important role. Throughout Hemingway’s life, his father had a critical influence on him. With the Nick Adams stories as the starting point, this paper proposes to study how Hemingway expresses his complex feelings to his father through these autobiographical stories.
The analysis of the paper falls into three parts. The first part gives a detailed study of the Nick stories. The next part traces the influence of Hemingway’s family, especially of his father on him by examining his whole life. The last part combines the previous studies and analyzes the influence of paternal worship on Hemingway’s outlook on life from Nick Adams Stories.
Key words: Hemingway, Nick Adams Stories, Paternal worship
