1. Introduction
In The Hours, three women made their choices about their own fate in one day, as Virginia Wolf said in the film, “a woman happened in a day, that day, a single day”. They are representatives of three periods, and their thoughts, behavior and decisions demonstrated the characteristic of women. From the end of the 19th century till now, there are there high tides of feminism. Each of them promotes the development of the world, not only in the improvement of women’s status, but also in the civilization of culture. The three protagonists separately stand for the personality of different periods. Their confusion, their lives, their tears and their brave choices left a profound impression on audiences. This paper is aimed at discussing the three high tides of feminism, especially in America. The existence of the film helps people understands the confusion and difficulty of women, and also inspires thousands of women.

2.1 The End of the 19th Century to the Early 20th Century --- the First High Tide of Feminism
No matter in Asia or in the West, that woman is regarded as a matter which belongs to men seems a custom since ancient times. Everything that lapses from this custom indicates a spontaneously unnatural thing. For example, when the people from other countries firstly know about Britain, the most surprising thing for them is that Britain unexpectedly was administrated under the Queen. This fact for them seems not understandable, but even unbelievable. However, to the British, a female leader seems not a very big deal, because they have gotten used to this. But if a woman wants to be a soldier or a councilor in Britain, it is unnatural. This proves that in spite of privilege, women are an accessory of men. Europe is the cradle land of the first high tide of feminism, which then spread around to other countries. This has a tight relationship with the development of its economy.
