Abstract
The western fancy novel the Lord of the Rings is regarded as the “Journey to the West” in western countries. Though these two works share great similarities in content and plot, huge culture differences are also revealed. Among those differences, concepts of “heroism” are highlighted. This dissertation focuses on analyzing the main protagonist in both books. Sun Wukong resists all kinds of authorities; Frodo shoulders the responsibility to save the world on his own, but the two heroes end up totally differently. Even though Sun Wukong has infinite power, he still cannot go against feudalism at that time. Frodo is short in shape, but fulfilled a heroic task. Different concepts of humanity give a total opposite endings to heroes, and reflect a cultural difference.

摘 要
西方奇幻小说《魔戒》在中国被誉为“西方的《西游记》”。此两部著作虽然在内容和情节上有很多相似之处,英语论文,但同时也表现出很大的中西文化异同,这其中东西方“英雄主义”观念的异同十分突出。本文以两部小说的第一主人公为主要略论对象。孙悟空大胆反抗一切权威;弗罗多只身担起拯救世界的重任,两个英雄却分别以失败和成功告终。孙悟空神通广大却逃不出封建礼教的约束;弗罗多身材矮小却成就英雄作为。中西人性观异同塑造了不同的英雄命运,展示出不同的文化异同。

1. Introduction
As one of the most renowned classic works in Chinese literature, Journey to the West is extraordinarily familiar to every Chinese people dated back four hundred years ago. It is based on the real life of Xuan Zang’s pilgrimage to India for Buddhist scriptures. When he returned to China, or the Great Tang as was called that time, he started to translate the sutras into Chinese, thus making a great contribution to the development of Buddhism in China.
The book Journey to the West was compiled based on the real story, and added some new features and fancy stories. The book mainly tells a story that Monk Tang, accompanied by Sun Wunkong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, went to the west to fetch the Buddhist scriptures. They survived eighty-one difficulties and fulfilled their task. The fancy imagination, twists and turns of the plot, vivid characters, humorous language and profound thought make this book a unique masterpiece in Chinese literature.
