Abstract
Sons and Lovers is regarded as D.H. Lawrence’s masterpiece and it is even considered the only major novel by some scholars. Some critics believe Sons and Lovers is vividly and completely illustrated Freud’s Oedipus Complex. But at that time Lawrence, by his own admission, did not acknowledge Freud’s writings and in Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious pointed out different view. The first part of this paper is a quick overview of Lawrence, Sons and lovers and Oedipus Complex. The second part of this paper mainly analyses and proves that Sons and lovers does not succeed to Oedipus Complex from three facets. Ultimately the author wants to stress that what Lawrence advocated was that industrial civilization stifled human nature and to explore the harmonious relationship between sexes. Therefore, Utilizing Oedipus Complex to analyze the novel is untenable.
