摘 要
查尔斯•狄更斯是19世纪英国伟大的批判现实主义小说家,英语论文题目,他的晚年著作《远大前程》是一部具有深刻社会意义和强烈艺术感染力的小说。作者不仅深刻地描写这时期社会生活的各个方面,英语毕业论文,鲜明而生动地刻画了各阶层的代表人物形象,并从人道主义出发对各种丑恶的社会现象及其代表人物进行揭露批判。本文以作者创作的时代背景维多利亚时期为切入点,详细略论了教育和特定时代背景下造就的各种鲜明而生动的人物的性格特点,刻画了各阶层的代表人物形象,并着重阐述了以上因素对著作主人公皮普成长过程带来的作用。

Abstract
Charles Dickens is a great British critical realist of the 19th century, whose Great Expectations was written in his later years with profound social significance and strong artistic appeal. Charles not only makes the story vivid and impressive, but also profoundly describes every aspect of social life during that period. By depicting representative characters of different classes, the author criticizes all the filthy social phenomena from the standpoint of a humanity..From the historical point of view, this paper deals with all aspects of social life of the Victorian Age, depicts a whole variety of distinctive characters and explores the impact of the above factors upon Pip’s character and his growth. Thus, the author aims to reveal the relationship between one’s living environment and his character.

1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction to the thesis
Social circumstances include families, schooling, social activities and working experiences. As a matter of fact, the process of the development of one’s character is also the process of one’s growth. What kind of social circumstances one is subjected to determines to a certain extent one’s development of characters. In Great Expectations, readers may taste the bitters and sweets in life through Pip’s character development, and people may find that his tragedy was mainly the result of social circumstances.
This thesis analyzes the relationship between social circumstances and the development of Pip’s character in Dickens’s Great Expectations to achieve a better understanding of this novel as well as Charles Dickens’s great power in the criticism toward society. The analysis will be carried out in the following aspects: family, educational conditions, social activities and working experiences of Pip.
