H. Lawrence. This novel describes a kind of abnormal maternal love from mother, Mrs. Morel, to son, Paul. The heroines in Sons and Lovers, Mrs. Morel, pours her passion on her son, and at the same time, she gets the feeling of romantic love affection which her husband cannot give her in their marriage life. The Golden Cangue is regarded by novelists as one of the prefect works of Eileen Chang. And this novel describes the crazy revenge behavior of the heroine, Cao Qiqiao, who loves her children in an abnormal way and disclosures the main reasons of the family tragedy. Both of these two novels reflect the social phenomenon---alienation of human nature. The close relationship between Mrs. Morel and her son Paul in Sons and Lovers is like that between Cao Qiqiao and her son Jiang Changbai in The Golden Cangue. This paper focuses on the reasons for the alienation of one’s human nature. And after a comparative study on family background, marriage life as well as the twisted psychology of the two mothers, this paper gets a conclusion that it is family conflicts and mother’s passionate love to son that are the main reasons for the alienation of human nature. To be alienated is to be distanced, or in opposition, or somehow not in the proper relationship to something. In saying that we are alienated, Marx is claiming that “we do not stand not in the proper to certain products, activities, people or features of our lives”. This paper will study on this social problem through comparing the two novels---Sons and Lovers and The Golden Cangue. 1.1 The purpose of this paper Alienation of human nature, as a kind of special social phenomenon, existed in the primitive society. However, people did not begin to study on this kind of social phenomenon until 18 century. As we know, Sons and Lovers and The Golden Cangue are both novels which reflect the alienation of human. In these two novels, the heroines have the similar fate and marriage experience ----they both feel despairing to their own life and marriage，and at the end they both ended up in twisted psychology. |
