Abstract
Published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is Jack London’s most-read book, and it is generally considered as the masterpiece of his so-called “early period”. The complicated character of Buck and its tough survival road vividly reflect the reality of the American society where the author lives and also re-appear the Klondike Gold Rush of American history. Since the novel deals with Buck as though he were a person with thoughts and emotions, it is of great importance to study the writer’s viewpoints and the social background by analyzing the character of Buck. This paper will first give a brief introduction of Jack London and his work The Call of the Wild, and then describe the general situations of Buck, including the transformation of his life and his emotions, which leads to the third chapter—the analysis of his character. As the fittest survivor, the pursuer of the new life, the fierce animal and the dedicator full of love and passion, Buck shows different perspective towards life before readers’ eyes. The Call of the Wild apparently is a dog’s story. In the deep part, it is a reflection of the real human world. Analyzing the complex character of the protagonist Buck can help readers and researchers on literature know the novel better and make people understand that love, bravery and adaptability are of great importance in the society.
