Abstract

This article introduces the two heroines in the book Vanity Fair, Becky and Amelia. In this analysis, the historical background has been taken into consideration, that is, the focus on money-worship and emerging feminism, especially the idea of female independence in the Industrial Revolution. In the book, Becky was raised in a poor family which influenced her world view since she was a little girl. Amelia, who was born to a rich family, was well-protected by her family and servants. That is the very reason that when they grow up, they have very different character traits, ways of doing things, and pursuits of life. Their characters are not clearly to be loved or hated. In these two figures, we can find some merits that we should learn from and fatal weakness that we need to get rid of. Nowadays, from the book Vanity Fair, we still can get some influences for our lives.

Key words: Vanity Fair; Amelia Sedley; Becky Sharp; money-worship values

1. Introduction
This thesis analyses the two heroines-Amelia Sedley and Becky Sharp of the book Vanity Fair. The book was written in the age of critical realism. At that time, it was the Industrial Revolution when England had come into an unprecedented flourishing time. “In the entire society, everyone wants to achieve their goal with ignoring others.” (刘艳芹 2017:8) The worship of money was the core value in that England society. The development of feminism was also reflected in this novel, and we can feel the author had a complex opinion toward these two women. Amelia and Becky came from families from different social levels, and they had different characteristics. So this is an exploration of these two heroines and their realistic significances to us.
