Abstract

Sister Carrie is the early representative work of the famous American realism writer Theodore Dreiser. In the metropolis of the United States, the fate of the poor family women is tragic under the background of capitalism. Sister Carrie describes the rural girl Carrie, who came to the big city Chicago to make a living. In order to escape poverty, she betrayed her virginity and became the famous singer with her beauty and beautiful voice. She felt lonely and grief in the rocking chair at the end of the novel. This paper attempts to analyze Carrie’s causes of tragedy from the social and personal aspects, which reveals that under the background of capitalism, even if the material needs have been greatly satisfied, spiritual life is still empty and painful, and happiness is always out of reach.
