Abstract: Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte’s greatest work which is universally acknowledged across the world. The novel revolves around the love and revenge of the protagonists. Based on psychoanalysis, the paper is intended to discuss the eternal but never tedious topic—love. It will be demonstrated in the following four parts: first, a detailed description of the extraordinary love between Heathcliff and Catherine including the sprouting of the original love and the sincerity of the mutual love; second is the endless hate which can be divided into three parts: Hindley’s taunt, Catherine’s betrayal and other’s despise; third is Heathcliff’s cruel and frenzied revenge against his contemporary generation and younger generation as well as its outcome; fourth is the resurrected human nature which also can be put into three parts: Heathcliff’s rethinking of the revenge, the ending of extrication and the descendant’s future. Through the four points, we can get the conclusion that the return of love and hate determines the fall of human nature and waking up. Meanwhile, hope always exists in the world. |
