Abstract
Lin Yutang (1895-1976) is an adept bilingual master when it comes to translation, edition and literature composition. His diversified cultural intake, belief system and life experience makes it possible for him to participate actively and fruitfully in the fields of translation, composition and edition, and leave the world some long-lasting, priceless fortune. So in a sense, his works give westerners an opportunity to understand the practical Chinese way of life. By employing his delicate feelings to various descriptions and uncovering profound meaning of feminine attributes between the lines, Mr. Lin voluntarily takes on the noble course of introducing China to the world.
Mr. Lin stands out, unquestionably and in a touching manner, because of his delicate perspectives and unique version of female worship long missing in China. Moment in Peking is a collection of words breaking free from the old-fashioned impression, and earned him a four-time Nobel nominee record in his writing career. In it, Mulan, the heroine, is a woman being perfect from inside out. By displaying the ups and downs of three influential Beiping families, audience are allowed to witness and learn about a thirty-year turbulence as well as the enlightenment and growth of Chinese women during the early 20th century. His subtle observation gives reader a general knowledge of his worship system.
So far, the academic world focuses on the special reasons behind unusual character personalities, the duality of Mulan's identity in life, and factors shaping the author's worship complex. And this thesis aims to concentrate on the subject of female worship by exploring its several tiers of indication and explanation using Moment in Peking as an example. The first part will give a general introduction to female worship and the author, Lin Yutang, with a brief analysis of their related causes. The second part will focus on women's frontline role in order to discuss the very way and intent out of which Mr. Lin perfects them and endows domestic authority. Next, the emphasis goes to the most apparent description of perfection – women's outer look, which is followed by a discussion centering around Mulan's dual identity as well as the appreciation of her distinguished perfection. Finally, the exploration of Mr. Lin's worship will end with some insights into his philosophical world.
Through the multiple tiers of a perfect image, this thesis will looking into the author's intention together with his beliefs and spiritual doctrines. It is important to experience the multiple dimensions of female beauty so that we can understand Mr. Lin's worship embedded in this novel, together with the far-reaching meaningfulness of female group.
