Abstract
A Farewell to Arms is a novel which was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1929. This novel is Hemingway’s second war-themed novel. As a representative of the lost generation, Hemingway depicts their disillusionment by his works. It depicts the grim reality of the war by the plot and main characters’ psychological change. Hemingway uses his own life experiences in World War I as the background to create this novel. With the spread of the plot, Henry and Catherine’s psychological change are the focus of this thesis. During the time of a war, material life is poor, environment is severe, love is windy, and spiritual world is visional. Man’s life is nothing to speak of in the war. With the spread of the war, people’s faith, life, and emotion all changed and will be ruined in the end. In A Farewell to Arms, it shows a whole process of the youth from joining a war, understanding the essence of the war, hating the war, and finally farewell to arms. This kind of process reveals the youth’s psychological trauma to a great extent. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the influences of a war to a generation. War and love are the two themes of A Farewell to Arms. This thesis attempts to draw a conclusion that war should be avoided regardless of its justice or injustice.

摘 要
《永别了武器》是1929年美国出版的海明威的第二部战争题材小说。海明威作为迷惘一代的代表性人物，他的多部著作揭示了他对战争的幻灭感。这本小说通过主要人物的故事情节以及其心理变化，突出体现了战争的残酷本质。小说的故事情节参照了海明威在一战中的亲身经历进行描写。本文将会重点略论随着情节的不断展开，亨利和凯瑟琳的心理变化。战争中的物质生活是贫瘠的，战争中的环境是恶劣的，战争中的爱情是虚无的，战争中的精神世界时空乏的，战争中人的生命是微不足道的。战争能摧毁一个人的信念、情感、以及生活。小说《永别了武器》通过对青年战士从无知参战，到了解了战争的本质进而失望厌战，最后决然放弃战争的描写，刻画战争给年轻一代带来的心理创伤。本论文的目的在于从心理角度研讨战争对一代人精神的扭曲。战争和爱情是小说的两个主题，通过探讨战争对人精神和肉体的摧残，英语论文，进而得出战争不论正义与否都应该极力避免的结论。
