Abstract
The novel Gone with the wind published in 1936 was defined as a marvelous achievement in world literature. The work successfully creates a typical image: Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of a slaveholder, whose personalities is distinct and impressive. In the meantime, the publication represents her psychological transformation during the whole American civil war: from innocent and carefree to shrewd and sophisticated. Further more, her indomitable disposition has a strong relationship with the background back then; we can put it in another way, the fate of the heroine is a miniature of the lives of South Americans during the civil war.
The characteristic of Scarlett is complicated; the most outstanding treats are strong, strength, bravery, hard working, self-improvement. This thesis mainly focus on the literary work itself, firstly, gathering materials from the plot, surroundings, portrait, dialogues to prove the truth of the judgment; secondly, explaining the inevitability of the formation of her character according to social background, living environment and the revolution of reality. Meanwhile, her charm displayed in different ways in the different era of her lifetime. Thirdly, the way the author creates Scarlett shows Chinese writers a lesson. Finally, for the current period in China, whether her personality is a merit or a defect is still controversial, and explorations in this direction are significant for our understanding both of human nature and of social reality.
