Abstract
Tess of the D’Urbervilles is one of the most famous novels of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex series. It’s about a poor county girl Tess who has been suffered from miseries had finished her life as a tragedy in the end. And this novel revealed the hard lives of poor people who were ender the intrusions of capitalism. This paper intends to demonstrate that the whole tragedy of Tess is avoidable by parting this novel into four parts, then analyzing them one by one in the aspects of the roles’ characteristics and the developments of plots,in order to figure out this tragedy is avoidable by above ways. At the same time, this paper will explain the importance of human’s conscious activity in their fates.
