An Analysis of the Linguistic Factors Affecting Listening Comprehension in ELT 浅析英语听力教学中的语言因素障碍 I. Introduction Listening comprehension is a complex course which inputs information, outputs information and deals with information. It is not a11 an independent skill but relates to the individual’s English level and the ability of analyzing and conclusion. This is the reason why listening comprehension is always the most difficult part in English learning. In the English classroom teaching, listening, speaking, reading and writing are four basic abilities and it is important to improve and develop them. Among these four basic skills,英语论文,the training of listening is most easily overlooked. The listening test of college entrance exam takes up about 20%of the total marks. It also gives many students a lot of invisible pressure, especially in rural middle schools. Among the four basic skills, listening is the most essential. It acts an important role in people’s daily life,英语论文题目,especially in oral communication. First, children obtain the 1anuage from the society only through listening, then, they study language by themselves. According to statistics, during the communication in daily life, it takes people 45%of their time to 1isten. Listening and speaking have a mutual close connection in daily life. The speaker will only get information through listening. At the same time, handling the information actively always helps people to master it freely and easily. Finally, it comes to feedback (spoken language and non spoken language). Thus, the process of communication has been completed in the end, so it gets the communicative purpose. Therefore, listening is not only a kind of social behavior to communicate, but also it is a social positive behavior indeed. There are many factors which impact Chinese students’ listening comprehension of English. Generally speaking, we can divide these factors into two classifications. That is linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors. Linguistic factors refer to the factors of language itself, such as the knowledge of phonetic, vocabulary, structure patterns and so on. The non-linguistic factors refer to the knowledge beyond linguistic such as lack of the knowledge of the culture background, the state of psychology, listening strategies and so on. II.The Influence of Phonetic Knowledge Some schools don’t have basic teaching equipment and teachers who teach English don’t qualify for teaching English, or the teaching method is not correct. As a result, students’ phonetic knowledge is very poor, even they can’t master elementary knowledge about phonetic. These are important obstacles in listening comprehension. i.The influence of poor pronunciation There is a situation, which often appears in English teaching. That is, students only can catch a few words after 1istening to the tape. As a matter of fact, they can recognize every word when they read the original passage. But they can’t master the main idea at the first time, because of their rotten pronunciation. The pronunciation of them is not the same as the pronunciation in the radio.
