Chapter I Introduction


This chapter will be unfolded from the following four parts: the background ofthe thesis, the research question, the significance of the research and the layout of thethesis.

1.1 Background
The 21stcentury is the age of information, when science and technology isdeveloping in a high speed, the international exchanges are made frequently, and thetalent people purse full self development and continuous improvement. Because theglobalization of the economic activities is deepened and the internationalization of theEducation is gradually promoted, a higher demand for the foreign language teaching isput forward. It is proved that the traditional modes of English teaching and thecontents of English teaching are not suitable for the development of the presentsituation any longer, because only minority of the English language learners can reallycommunicate with native speakers and read the originals and newspapers in English.Just as Liu Runqing said in 2017 “several tens of millions of people have variety ofcertificates of the foreign language in our country, yet the foreign language talents arestill very scare.” Besides, the former Vice Premier Li Lanqing also pointed out thatthe foreign language teaching has a problem of “high cost in time and low efficiency”.

Application of newspaper reading in senior high school can promote students’reading competence. However, some people have the doubt that whether it is feasibleto apply newspaper reading in senior high school, and there are also some teacherswho have no idea how to apply it in class.Therefore, through this empirical study, it is practically significant for thestudents’ continuous development as well as improving the efficiency of Englishteaching and promoting the reform of English teaching to demonstrate the tworesearch questions: 1. Can English newspaper reading help to enrich students’ Englishreading strategies? 2. Can English newspaper reading improve students’ language comprehensive ability?


1.3 Significance of the research
In order to meet the higher demand put forward by the age when economydevelops rapidly and international communication becomes intense, our countrycarried out the basic educational curriculum reform. The standards of the newsyllabus and the new curriculum have been formulated, and some new versiontextbooks have been put into use, but there still exist such problems as the textbooksare confined to grammar and classroom language, some of the teaching contents areout of date, so students cannot acquire the latest information to catch up thedevelopment of the times, and cannot improve the ability of acquiring informationthrough reading only textbooks.But students have the need of gaining the newest information and learning thepopular language. It is its duty for the senior high school English teaching at the stageof basic education to improve the students’ abilities of obtaining knowledge and usingEnglish in order to make students meet the needs of the times in the future.
