It is hoped that this thesis will offer an introduction to the basic information of CDA by which hard news will be analyzed, and that some inspirations for College English Newspaper-reading course will be grasped. Chapter One Introduction 1.1 Research Background Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA),as a new emerging branch of linguistic research has been emphasized by a growing number of foreign and domestic scholars, such as G.Kress(1982,1985),R.Fowler(1979,1987,1991),N.Fairclough(1989,1992,1993,1995),Van Dijk(1988,1991,1993,1995,2017),Xin Bin(1998,2017, 2017),Chen Zhongzhu(1995),etc.It’s generally agreed that as an approach different from other approaches to discourse analysis,CDA is to uncover not only propositional meaning of a text but also its ideological assumptions, and therefore the exercise of power in texts.According to Fairclough(1989,1995),CDA combines the study of language and the study of society;specifically,CDA is to expose the hidden ideologies which are embodied in discourse and are determined by relations of power in particular social institutions, and in society as a whole. In all,the function of CDA is uncovering the relationship among language, ideology and power. However, this notion is not stressed by language teachers who neglect developing learners’critical language awareness. Nowadays,in China, there are a growing number of colleges and universities which have set English Newspaper-reading course for students of English. We find that newspapers are of benefit to improve students’language abilities for the following reasons: (1)They’re authentic and direct source of information from native speakers. (2)The content is very rich.Students can choose whatever news they like. (3)Newspapers can provide students with a direct connection to current western culture and thought.
