There areprobably in the region of three hundred million Chinese actively engaged in the job oflearning English.English is an important foreign language in China and many Chinese wish to beproficient in the language. English is viewed primarily as a necessary tool which can facilitateaccess to modern scientific and technological advances, and secondarily as a vehicle topromote commerce and understanding between China and the countries where English is amajor language.Similarly, the Report of the English 2017 Conference in Beijing, sponsored jointly by theBritish Council and the State Education Commission of the China concur that the Chineselearn English because it is to a large extent the language of science. The report further addsthat they learn it because it is the neutral language of commerce, the standard currency ofinternational travel and communication. Additionally, they learn it because one finds moresoftware in English than in all other languages put together (Bowers, 1996:3).In Chinese learning institutions, however, English is taught as a subject and as a foreignlanguage. For this reason, attainment of proficiency of accuracy and fluency in all the aspectsof the language take place in the classroom. Teachers of English do a lot to ensure that theirlearners acquire the required competence in English and indeed competence in English is agoal every student aspires for.English has doubtlessly gained prominence in China and educators, therefore, have aduty to do the utmost to ensure that students attain an acceptable standard of competence in it.Deliberate measures need to be taken so that students are equipped sufficiently to be able touse the language accurately and confidently. This involves the correct use of Englishphonology and grammar.One of the general objectives for teaching English in China is to enable the learner to useits grammar correctly and appropriately. This involves not only the effective use of the maingrammatical structure, for example, sentences, clauses, phrases and words, but also the abilityto write logically and coherently on a given topic. The learner is expected to demonstratecreativity and flexibility in sentence structures. Yet most students leave school with limitedcompetence in English despite the relatively high priority given to the learning of English inChina.At the university level, it is assumed that the students are well versed in the mechanics ofthe language. Nevertheless, a look at the writing of Chinese university students shows thatthere is a great problem in sentence construction and the use of other grammatical featuressuch as verbs, nouns and prepositions in their English writing. Many of the sentences arelong-winded hanging phrases and ambiguous, while others are hardly comprehensible due tothe numerous glaring errors.
