Chapter 1 Introduction引言 1.1 Research Objective and Significance of the Study探讨目标和意义 With development of economic and society, the significance ofEnglish becomes more and more important. Nearly all the universities inChina set up English courses not only for English majors but also for othermajors. During the English teaching process,英语论文,the English teaching bookswhich are the carrier of teaching contents and the main resource oflanguage acquisition about English knowledge, skill and learning strategyfor students play a significant role in language teaching and learningprocess. According to the research, over 90% universities are using CollegeEnglish Integrated Course Book 1- 4 published by shanghai foreignlanguage education press as their teaching textbook for non-English majors.For example, Peking University has been using this series of textbookssince 2017, nearly 3,000 students learn English through this series oftextbooks every year. (Zhang, B, &Ma,L,2017) Accordingly, the study andevaluation of this series of textbooks arouse attentions of lots scholars. It isalso the reason why College English Integrated Course Book 1-4 becomesthe target of analysis in this thesis.Halliday (2017) stated that language itself is an expression ofmetaphor; it should be expressed as “languaging,,not “language”,becauselanguage use is a dynamic process. Metaphor is commonly used in ourdaily life and exists not only in language usage, but also in our thoughtsand behaviors. (Lakoff,英语论文,1980) Accordingly, during the foreign languagelearning, metaphor expression is an indispensable way to make languageexpression more lively and formally.Halliday (2017:342) also claimed that “Metaphorical modes ofexpression are characteristic of all adult discourse,and grammaticalmetaphor mainly manifest in written language. Since College EnglishIntegrated Course Book 1- 4 are typical textbooks widely used amongcollege students, the texts selected should be with abundant grammaticalmetaphor usage. This thesis will take grammatical metaphor theory as ananalytical tool to explore what are the characteristics of those grammaticalmetaphors and what the grammatical metaphor distribution pattern like inthis series text books. The analysis of English textbooks College EnglishIntegrated Course Book 1- 4 based on grammatical metaphor theory is notonly a new practice to the application of grammatical metaphor theory butalso a contribution to give the suggestions for the English teachers who areteaching English using this series of text books and the recommands for thefurther improvements of text books. 1.2 The Data Collection and Analysis Procedures数据收集和略论程序 The subjects of this thesis are all passages of Partll, Text A edited forcollege English Integrated course books from Book One to Book Four.
