Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 General background of the research
Montessori educational thought has quite an influence in the world. It was created atthe end of the nineteenth century. From a contemporary perspective, her preschooleducational thought still have some limitations.With the deepening of reform and opening policies, our country is continuouslylinked with the world in the realms of political, economic and social. English, as aninternational language, has become an important part of children education and is paidmore and more attention. Many Chinese parents have high expectations of their childrenand hope English can help their children lay the foundation for future growth and makethem more internationally competitive (Zheng, 2017). For this reason, children Englisheducation became a focused topic. This phenomenon mainly originates from a belief asmost of people believe. That is the existence of a critical period for learning languages.The hypothesis claims that there is an ideal “window” of time to acquire language in alinguistically rich environment, after which further language acquisition becomes muchmore difficult and effortful.Since 21th century, more and more kindergartens have been taking English coursesand bilingual kindergartens emerge in endlessly. Meanwhile Montessori method becamefashionable for its scientific educational idea, unique educational method and effective educational charm. Hence a large amount of kindergartens profess that they use theMontessori method. Certainly the fees are very high. But parents are still flocking to thesekindergartens by following the principle of “All for the children”. Then how about thepresent situation of the combination of Montessori method and children English teaching?How about the effect? Do the teachers truly understand the essence of Montessori method?These questions prompted the author to investigate the Shijiazhuang F kindergarten andmake an analysis.

1.2 Specific background of the study
Montessori classes have been set up in F kindergarten since 2017. It is one of theearliest kindergarten in Shijiazhuang to introduce Montessori method. Now there are threeMontessori classes in the kindergarten. These classes adopt multi-age education and enrollchildren between the ages of three to five. Each class averages fifteen children. They aredivided into three groups. The children in red group are about five years old. The childrenin blue group are about four years old. The children in yellow group are about three yearsold. They are the equal of the top, middle and bottom class in an ordinary class. From the above diagram, it shows that the proportion of children in three classes isbalance. There are more children in red group. The number in blue group is average. Thereare less children in yellow group. F kindergarten tries to explore Montessori education inpractice. F kindergarten has been recognized by introducing the Montessori education toparents and the public. They lay emphasis on the quality of Montessori teachers. Here isthe basic conditions of teachers.
