II.The Present Situation of English Teaching in Secondary Vocational School
Perhaps over ten years ago,the students who wanted to go to secondary vocational schools had to have higher marks than those who wanted to go to ordinary middle schools in which they are more academically oriented for the entrance examination of college and university they want to go to upon graduation. However, at present,English teaching in vocational schools is quite different from that in primary schools, middle schools, colleges and universities.Compared with other middle-school students, they belong to the third-class group of middle schools in China. The students in the first-class group aim at entering key universities and those in the second-class group expect to be admitted to college. What is more, some students who do not like academic teaching can’t pass the entrance examination to the ordinary middle schools. Parents do not want them to stay at home idling, so they have the chance to go to a secondary vocational school. The students who go to vocational schools usually have lower marks than those who go to ordinary middle schools so that they learn English passively and the teachers find it very hard to teach these students. The students in vocational schools do not have much interest in English. In addition, few of them dare to speak English during the first few classes. They know few words, phrases and grammars. Moreover, there are no nation wide standard teaching materials. As for English teaching in secondary vocational schools, students are required to learn English from the same materials as other secondary vocational schools and middle schools, and this poses a serious challenge to English teachers in secondary vocational schools.Firstly, the teachers are given much less time for English teaching because too many majors are arranged in syllabus in secondary vocational schools.Secondly, students are quite poor in English proficiency so they study English passively, so English teachers in secondary vocational must pay attention to their teaching methods and the students’ interest and enthusiasm in the future.
