Chapter one Introduction
1.1 Problems in English writing in Secondary Vocational Schools
Second Vocational School means students in this kind of school come fromjunior middle school and most of them are poor in English, especially in Englishwriting. And at the same time, they are lack of interest in studying. Some of themeven hate learning English because they have unpleasant experience about learningEnglish when they are in the middle school. All of these are big challenges to theEnglish teachers. As to the English writing, there are some problems of the studentsand of the teachers.Firstly, here are the problems about the students: Most of them are poor in basicwriting skills. Although these students are familiar with some definition of Englishgrammar for a long time and have known many grammar rules, they still do not knowhow to use them in a proper and effective way. Most of them cannot expressthemselves in a smooth way and only put some simple sentences together. Once theyare given a topic to write a composition, some of them even do not know how to writeand what to write. And also they have low interest in writing. There are only tworeasons for these students to write a composition. One is that they need to pass theexam; the other is that they need to finish the task which is assigned by their teacher.Sometimes, even they finish a composition, when they face the errors corrected by theteacher, they feel frustrated. Gradually, they may lose interest in English writing.

1.2 Significance of the study
Writing is a very important part in language learning and it is the most difficultpart in the four basic communicative language skills to most language learners. It isgenerally regarded as a creative skill. But many English teachers do not really knowhow to teach it efficiently. The traditional teaching approaches seem time-consumingand inefficient. The students learn English writing in the traditional way; they spentmore and achieve less. The Chinese students, especially students in the SecondaryVocational Schools, are afraid to write a composition, because most of them havevery little chance to use and speak English in the real world. Sometimes they think thetopic is dull and has little meaning, so they are bored at it easily. In fact, when the students practise writing, there are many problems in students’English writing: The basic skills of this language are quite poor; there aregrammatical errors everywhere in their articles. They do not know how to use everyword appropriately, the wrong sentence structure, the wrong tense and voice are oftenseen in their compositions, and the lack of vocabulary is also a serious problem. Butall these problems are not the most serious one. The key problem is that the studentshave no interest in writing English composition. So the English writing teachingshould arouse the student’s interest and try to change their attitudes and learningbehavior, help them to become confident and willing to write beautiful Englisharticles. The teacher should find a more scientific way to teach their students.
