Chapter l Introduction


1.1 Review of the extra-curricular activity
In China, the extra-curricular activity began in 1956. At first, it mainly included physical exercises, productive work and learning groups. In 1982,the Ministry of Education defined the extra-curricular activity as “the extra-curricular activity is a continuation of the first activity. The purposes of the extra-curricular activity are to help expand students' knowledge, develop students' expertise, train students' thinking ability, practical ability and creative ability. Its characteristics are interesting, flexible, diverse, and effective." After decades of development, the study of the extra-curricular activityhas made great progress. Many advantages of the extra-curricular activity are widely acknowledged, like 1) the extra-curricular activity can expand students' knowledge and stimulate students'curiosity; 2) the extra-curricular activity can enrich students' spiritual life; 3) the extra-curricular activity can foster student's creativity and imagination; 4) the extra-curricular activity can develop students' organization and coordination capacity; 5)the extra-curricular activity can develop students' interests and their personality. However, due to many reasons,the current implementation of the extra-curricular activity in our high school is not ideal.

1.1课外活动回顾

1.2 In China, the current implementation of the extra-curricular
English activity in high schoolAlthough educationists and teachers think that there are many evident advantagesof the extra-curricular English activity, many investigations show that the currentimplementation of the extra-curricular English activity in high school is not optimistic.There are several reasons for this problem.One of the main reasons is that for high school students, work is more stressful andless leisurely than in past. So students do not have sufficient spare time and energy to doextra-curricular activities, such as reading English books. For many students,it is hardto focus their energy on textbook, let alone read English book in their spare time. And also many teachers in high school don't think it is a great deal to carry out theextra-curricular English activity. For them, memorizing more new words or knowinganother grammar is more important. They would rather make use of the chance of theextra-curricular English activity to teach more words and grammar, or carry onexaminations. Another primary reason is that the school, even the whole society, thinksthat the score of examination is the most important thing. The interest of learningEnglish or the ability to handle English is not important as long as the score is high.However, focus on high exam scores can cause some serious problems. Above all, itmay limit the development of a student's interests.
What these teachers or school fail to see is that the interest and method of learningEnglish is the essence of mastering English. Moreover, because of the lack of fond,technology and teaching equipment, carrying out the extra-curricular English activity inhigh
