1.1 Background of the Thesis探讨背景
Nowadays, higher vocational education plays an important role in the highereducation system in our country. The purpose of the vocational and technical educationis to train advanced workers with professional skills or technical abilities. Most majorsin vocational colleges are set in accordance with the market demand. In the 21st century,the demand of translators and interpreters increases greatly due to the rapiddevelopment of globalization, increasing foreign trade affairs and frequent internationalexchanges. In China most universities have set up translation courses for English majors, and some have even set up translation majors. However,many students are behind theability to accomplish the practical translation task after graduation. The main reason forthis is that the translation courses and textbooks lag behind economic development aswell as the development of science and technology.To respond to the needs of the times,many vocational and technical colleges settranslation skills courses to train translators or interpreters with some specialprofessional background, such as Logistics knowledge or electric light sourceknowledge and so on. Translation course in higher vocational colleges distinguishesfrom undergraduate course in universities. Translation teaching in universities mainlyfocuses on translation theory and translation practice. However,the translation exercisescould not cover every industry field. In vocational colleges, English majors are relatedto one special profession. For example, English majors in Jingzhou Vocational Collegeof Technology are specialized in Applied Business English. All the translation activitiesare related to the actual business affairs. After graduation, they could easily adapt to theactual business activities.In spite of the above advantage, students' translation competence as a whole in thevocational colleges can not be compared favorably with that of university students.Students are weak in educational background, self-learning abilities and languageorganization abilities. So translation teaching appears more difficult in vocationalcolleges.Translation is a special kind of activity to convey information and demonstrates aseries of interactive relationship among communicators, channels of distribution andinformation recipients. No matter what the translation teaching form is,translationteaching must consist of teaching objectives,teaching principles, teaching methods andteaching contents. Nowadays experts in translation and education field agree on thebasic definition of translation teaching: Canadian scholar Jean Delisle suggested that“translation teaching" is the teaching which aims to develop professional translationskills; Professor Mu Lei pointed out that "translation teaching” refers to teaching whichfocuses on developing translation skills; many other scholars also have much the similarpoint of view.
