Chapter One literature review
With aiming to achieve the purposes of this study, it is necessary to have anoverview of the previous research into interpersonal meaning and genre study. Then aparticular genre---argumentation which is the research objective in this thesis will beintroduced specifically. After that, researches on college English course books inChina are provided, especially College Experiencing English.
1.1 Interpersonal Meaning
Interpersonal meaning is so-called language which people use reflects andinfluences the relationship between them in human communication, and can bedescribed as “language as exchange” which means the main purpose of languagecommunication is to “exchange” and to interact with others. Halliday originallyproposed the notion of interpersonal meaning in 1985 and interpreted thatinterpersonal meaning refers to the social relations among the participants, enablingus to influence others, to provide or ask for information, to explain our attitudes, toorder, to apologize, to confirm, to invite and to reject, etc. There are also manyscholars study interpersonal meaning in different fields.Different Approaches to Interpersonal MeaningSaussare (1972), who is the father of modern linguistics, draws distinctionbetween langue and parole. While actually, the distinction between langue and paroleleads to the separation of what is social from what is individual. At the same time,Saussare expresses that language is applicable only in actual social behavior, stressingon the interpersonal aspect of verbal behavior.In psychological field, Buhler (see Dun Yabin, 2017) distinguishes threefunctions of language: representational, expressive and conative functions, which canbe seen as a forerunner of Halliday’s three metafunctions: ideational, interpersonaland textual. While Halliday’s are inspired by Buhler’s in part and different fromBuhler’s mostly.In the field of pragmatics, realize that interpersonal relationship relatesto the social status, age and sex of the speaker and the hearer. They attempt to revealEnglish teaching from Systemic Functional Grammar perspective and indicated itsmain achievements including Communicative Language Teaching, Cultural Teachingmethod, Written Teaching method, Topical Negotiated Syllabus.During these years Li Zhanzi also wrote many papers on different academicjournals to demonstrate her ideas about systemic functional grammar and applied thetheory of interpersonal meaning in discourse analysis to instruct EFL teaching. In2017, Li Zhanzi with her co-authors wrote a famous book named Cross-culturalAutobiographies and The Teaching and Learning of English to present therelationship between cross-cultural autobiographies and the teaching and learning ofEnglish. She puts the appraisal system as the theoretical framework to analyzecross-cultural autobiographies, which is the prominent part of this book. While strictlyspeaking, appraisal system in this book belongs to mediated discourse analysis that isa branch of critical discourse analysis. The authors consider that the theoreticalframework and methodologies can provide the teaching and learning of Englishprofoundly.From the previous study of the notion of interpersonal meaning, it is evident thatscholars and researchers didn’t hold an agreeable idea on the definition ofinterpersonal meaning.
