1.1 Background of the Study
As the direct way to acquire knowledge and understand outside world, reading isundoubtedly regarded as a vital skill in English learning. Krashen (1985) advocates thatreading is helpful in advancing one’s writing skill and expanding vocabulary. Learners’reading capacity is considered to be a vital indication of their comprehensive linguisticcompetence. Students obtain the foreign information, enjoy European literature, and expandthe international vision through English reading. Therefore, reading instruction, as the majorcontent in the high-school English education, is increasingly attached great importance to bymany educators in the information age.Nevertheless, the situation of English reading education in high school is not acircumstance to satisfactory in China. Students lose many scores in reading comprehensiontest. The overall English reading capacity of the students in high school doesn’t accord withwhat New Curriculum Standards for General High School demands. Successful readingcomprehension requires not only the knowledge of syntax or vocabulary, but also the capacityof perception to the essence of the text being interacted with. This section will elaborate onthe existing problems from two aspects: teachers and students. From the angle of teachers, teaching models give rise to lots of problems: many teachersoften dominate the whole teaching process and don’t let students construct reading meaningon their own. Lacking in substantial interaction with students, they adopt traditional teachingmethod to pour linguistic knowledge into students. Reading instruction isn’t based on theexisting acceptance of pupils. It directly results in the phenomenon that student’s participationcan’t be widely mobilized and most of them take little interest in engaging themselves inreading. The reasons accounting for this may be that large numbers of educators don’t dig intothe nature of reading process and resort to the conventional teaching methods that areteacher-oriented, grammar-oriented or text-oriented. Teachers are making efforts to explain oreven translate every passage sentence by sentence, or word by word in order that students canbe capable to grasp the meaning of every unit. Students are just like reticent receiving boxespassively taking in what teachers are pouring in.
